The expansion of marketing channels means that for many companies their marketing budget is spread more thinly. This in turn means that it is more important than ever to monitor the performance of campaigns in order to focus efforts on the channels and techniques that perform best for business.

Whichever channels a business chooses to target, the basic targets of any marketing remain the same:  to ensure the message reaches the target audience; to ensure the message is understood by the audience; and to ensure the message stimulates the required action by the audience.

Effective tracking of marketing campaigns allows marketers to know if they are achieving the goals they set themselves and if individual campaigns are working. In turn, this allows marketers to optimize their budgets by measuring marketing ROI and benchmarking against marketing metrics (KPIs).
